Worm Farming

Worm Farming is a fantastic way to cultivate the a super beneficial lil creature for gardens.
It is very easy, cheap and abundant. According to what I have read, as I have not actually tested this my self. Is that temperature, moisture and food affect the reproduction rate of worms. Under the best conditions, one pair of worms will produce one egg capsule each week. Each capsule contains up to 20 worms that will hatch in 2-3 weeks. These new worms will be capable of reproducing in 2-3 months. That's a lot of worms!
It is very easy to buy or find a hand full of worms to start the process.

Worm farming is a very easy way of turning vegetable and fruit scraps into a great potting soil or soil supplement for your garden or house plants. It can be done year round, by apartment dweller, home owners AND businesses. Worm farming is particularly useful for people who would like to compost their food scraps but do not have space for a backyard compost bin.
Or for me because I do do lots of composting I actually have worm farms so that I can add the quickly multiplying worms to my garden where they will naturally fertilize the soil as they live!!!

Here is what you need to get started:
Take not this is only 1 way and there are many ways. I will list alternate ways and pics.

Container of wood or plastic. I use a sturdy plastic container that is about 9 inches deep, 9 inches wide and 14 inches long. The measurements are not real critical. This an easy size for many situations. If you are going to keep your worm farm inside, you will want it to be water tight. The worms are going to be happier when kept in the dark where it is moist. If your container is clear, wrap it to keep light out or place it in a cabinet or a opaque container to seal out the light. Have a lit that has very small holes in it like a 1/32 inch drill bit hole. That way they can breath but not crawl all over the place.
Make sure that the place you find to store the bin is away from vibrations. Worms will try to move to a better location if they are too near a source of vibration.

Worms. I really suggest that you use red worms. They are also called red wrigglers or manure worms.
I do have some night crawlers farms but they do require much more space and are not as easy to maintain.

Bedding material. Start with some shredded newspaper, moistened, not wet. Use the black and white pages or really any paper without much gloss or color. Add a couple of handfuls of garden soil, not potting soil, and a couple of crushed egg shells. Keep the bedding damp but not sopping. The moisture helps them to breathe, but too much water will drown them.

Food. You can feed your worms fruit and vegetable scraps and starchy scraps, like bread, oatmeal, and pasta. Do not feed them too much acidic foods, like citric fruits, coffee ground and tea bags. Also fatty or high protein foods are also not a great idea. I really don't use any citrus, fats or proteins at all. They do best with a pH between 7 & 8. You can use egg shells to balance the effects of coffee grounds, orange and lemon peels. Never feed your worms meat, poultry, dairy products, or salty food , like potato chips. These will create odors and attract insects. Your worms will eat about half their body weight each day. Take this into consideration when you are deciding how much food to add to the bin.
Worms require oxygen so keep the lid partially open to allow air to circulate. on in the farm.
Worms will function very well at room temperature. Keep the farm temperature between +40 degrees F and +85 degrees F. Remember that heat will build up quickly in the farm if it is left in the sunlight.

Red worms reproduce often. Small, oval shaped cocoons in the bedding indicate that nature is taking its course. Cocoons may contain several baby worms and will take several weeks to hatch. Watch for tiny white worms. Poultry egg shells added to the bedding will provide calcium the worms need to reproduce. Don't worry about red worms taking over the estate, their population is limited by the size of their environment.
Its very cool how worms just naturally know when there is enough worms existing in there area. When there is a certain amount they just stop breading!
Farming worms:

Place the damp shredded newspaper with the garden soil and crushed egg shell in the container. Don't pack it down. Add the worms to their new home. If you leave the lid off and the light on, it will encourage the worms to investigate the new digs. Don't forget to add some worm food before you move the bin into the dark.

As your worm population increases, you can add more food per day. Burying the food in the damp newspaper will keep mold from growing in the worm farm. Worms can live on just the paper so its not critical that they get food every day. If there is no food or paper in there its time to get them more but there is no need to get a huge pile going on in there or it will rot/mold or create other realities we don't really want.

If your bedding is too wet, carefully drain the water and add dry ingredients.

Soon you will notice an increase in the worm castings in your worm farm. This makes a great natural fertilizer. And all it cost you was a little time and some stuff that you were going to toss in the garbage.
You can use these castings in potted house plants or mix it with water to create worm tea to feed to garden or other plants. Super rich stuff! Your plants will appreciate it!

When you see that bedding is no longer identifiable, you will want to harvest. Worms cannot survive in their own waste. The dirt will be very fine, very moist and very homogenized. Use it in some way, make another farm out of the multiplied worms, add them to a garden or give them to a friend.
I started with 1000 worms and have many worms farms of hundreds of thousands now. I use the castings for plants and add the worms to the garden when there is more than I want to house ;-)

There is lots of info on the web about worm farming. Google it or check on youtube for videos of the process. You will find it very easy and very rewarding.
Farm On!!

Composting Article

Composting is a great pleasure for me. When I compost I am very in tune with the natural abundance of the circle of life.

When I first got into composting I realized how much matter there was being under utilized and or thrown away. By utilizing many of these for composting I was able to generate 1,000's of lbs of compost per week with very little cost and effort.

Compost is essential for any truly organic garden to produce in an abundant fashion. With really good compost plants don't need fertilizers. Because they are so strong and healthy not only do the produce abundantly but they are not subject to many diseases and other ailments.

I love organic sustainable abundance!

The main understandings important to efficient composting are 3 fold:

1 moisture. Compost wants to be moist not wet.

2. Air Flow. Compost wants to be able to breath but not be super exposed to the elements. So usually the smallest size compost we want to have is 3x3x3ft. A container is good but only if it has some breathing space. I love to use pallets, chicken wire or old pieces of fence to make my bins. Bins are not necessary though.

3. Nitrogen. Nitrogen is what speeds up the decomposition process. Nitrogen is availabe in most green mater such as grass, vegetable scraps or manure. This needs to be added whenever the compost is no longer hot (135 df or hotter) to continue the fast decomposition process. This is not necessary as compost will decompose anyways however it is quite possible to fully compost leaves or straw in 1.5 months turning it twice a week and adding a nitrogen source.

What is awesome about all this is that water, air and compost able matter are all over the place and very free. I collect thousands of bags of leaves from suburbs that are all free and going to the trash. Not only do I get free compost matter but I also save the land fill and lots of gas getting it there.

I also get lots of free wood chips DELIVERED to my property from tree trimming companies. One needs to be wiling to get at least a truck load but other than that its a sweet deal.

These are the to largest sources of carbon in my compost. There are many other carbons available.

Matter is decomposing commonly. Composting is just a way to spead it up and utilize it for a purpose. Even metal or plastic left in the elements is going to decompose. Now we may not want to use this for the garden and it may take years but it is decomposing also.

So in composting we want to speed up this process in an efficient abundant manner for us.

By creating an environment where it is moist and active microscopic life forms start to flourish eating and composting the matter. Producing us with compost!
Its all about creating and nurturing a specific environment for this purpose.

So to start composting find a site.

I like to choose a site close to where I will use it as it cuts down on my transporting of the compost. I build a bin out of whatever I have available. If I use chicken wire I will cut a length of chicken wire at least long enough to make a 3 foot diameter circle. I will then connect each end together to form a cylinder. I can then fill this with layers of compost. If I made a bin out of pallets I would take 3 pallets and stand them up on their sides. I would then tie each one together so that 1 pallet is tied together on two corners and the other two are tied on one corner to that base pallet. This forms a 3 sided square.

To begin the compost I start with a layer of carbon (dried dead organic matter) for me leaves or wood chips. I then do a much smaller layer of nitrogen (living active matter) for me it is green grass clippings, manure or vegetable matter. The ratio for carbon to nitrogen is about 30-1 in volume not weight, 1 being the nitrogen.
As I layer the carbon and nitrogen I want to wet the layers with water. Depending on how dry the materials are will dictate how much water I use. Just remember that the compost wants to be wet not dry. The life thrives in moisture but is very much inhibited by flooding.

I just then repeat this process of layering carbon, nitrogen and water. It is a very simple and natural process that when nurtured profits great results.
An active compost will get up to 150-170 degrees F. You will know it is active because if you stick your hand in the center of the pile it will be to hot to keep near. If it does not get hot at all then there a few elements that can be out of whack. 1. To much or not enough water. 2. Not enough nitrogen (cant have to much if its a natural source) 3. No circulation, meaning it cant breath. This is not normally an issue.

If the compost does get hot then its working. Some people have compost thermometers that are a couple feet long that they stick into the centers. When the temp starts to drop its time to turn it and and nitrogen and water.

The main question is how much and how fast are you wanting compost. With the right ingredients and the proper nurturing it is quite possible to have a pile composted in 1.5 months. This will require turning about 2 times a week while adding a nitrogen source and the proper moisture. Do not add carbon during this phase. Carbon is only added in the begging. This is of course if you are wanting fast compost. Basically the nitrogen composts fast and the carbon is what takes "time" so by adding more carbon every time the compost will not really fully compost until months after the last addition of carbon.

The pile will get smaller and smaller every time it is turned as the matter becomes more compact and of smaller particle size.

Healthy compost does not stink. It is a common mis conception that compost stinks.
If it does stink it is because there are ingredients that are not ideal such as flesh, fatty foods, litter box, etc or its not getting turned so the matter is just rotting on top instead of composting.

After a very short time of experimenting with composting it will feel very natural and one can evolve techniques based on this.

I myself do not even turn compost any more. I have so much compost going at 1 time that I can just use my huge loads from a season before instead of needing it every month.

So what I do is create many large long term compost piles. I build large piles 4 or more feet tall and 10 or more feet wide/long. I then mix in nitrogen and moisture to get it started and leave it. The only thing I do is keep it moist by running a sprinkler on it every now and again depending on when its feeling dry. This takes longer but in the long run it saves me a lot of "time" and I still have just as much compost when I need it.

If there were 1 factor that is most important in composting I would say its moisture. A dry heap will not compost at all. Actually even good compost if it gets to dry will be much less nutrient. I feel that a lot of the benefit to fresh healthy compost is the living microbes in the soil that play many over looked rolls. So I always keep my compost covered/protected from the sun.

This is compost at its finest. Here is a list of many common abundant materials for composting:

Carbons Sources
1. Leaves
2. Wood Chips.
3. Straw/hay or brown grass clippings.
4. Cardboard, junk mail & Newspaper.
5. Yard Scraps.

Nitrogen Sources.
1. Green Grass.
2. Manure
3. Coffee grounds. All Starbucks save their grounds for composters. Stop in and ask.
4. Vegetable Scraps.
5. Pretty much any living green matter.

Curing Cancer and other deadly diseases

The idea of cancer has seemed quite strange to me for a long time. I have not feared it for I have intuitively known that by loving and taking care of my body I would be fine. That by listening and providing what it needs wellness would be. The amazing amount of money spent by people to cure cancer with dangerous expensive methods that don't even have good percentage improvement rates. It boggles my mind. The amount of funds gone into "the cure for cancer" is also boggling for the answers have been out there for many many years many generations in fact and yet billions of dollars hasn't found it. I have just recently found to sources that have much info on curing cancer and almost all diseases. Even though intuitively I know them to be great sources of info I have researched them on my own to find many many resources to back the info provided. It seems weird for I no anyone else shouldn't need to convince someone of wellness being natural and easy. Why would one choose to resist such bounty full info in exchange for such corrupt dysfunctional info?
Yes think, yes take everything at face value, yes ask questions, but please consider these resources for even if there is a sight chance anything in there is true the rewards are priceless.

This is the first book I read in the last month that had simple cheap sensible solutions to not only cancer and aids but most all disease. I bought it and loved it. Its an ebook with 100% money back guarantee. Please just buy it.
One Minute Cure
When I first read about this I intuitively knew it to be however I was blown away by how this was not common knowledge. There are thousands of people dying every day from cancer in this country alone not to mention all the other diseases this can cure as well. Its so cheap and easy its at least worth a try. So i started doing online research on the subject and found thousands of articles, papers, studies, web sites and other bits of info to uphold what info was in this book.
I have been doing this for a few months now and still love it. Its uber cheap and easy therapy with awesome benefits. To good to pass up... unless its not. We have to want wellness and abundance for it to be a part of our life.

This is the second resource I have found in the last month with simple, sensible solutions to sickness, disease, cancer included. The movie is called "The Beautiful Truth" There is also a book by Dr. Max Gerson who this movie is made about. It is solution to disease and sickness through simple diet. Almost a 100% cure rate on all patients, and thats after hundreds and hundreds of cases.
Dr.Gersons family member who is highly involved in Gerson Institute and Gerson related subject will also be at the Rethinking Education Conference this september. Its an awesome conference on its own but this is an exciting adition. I will also be there facilitating awesomeness. Check out the web site Rethinkind Education Conference

A new resource I have found is http://www.zerodisease.com really cool info though no techniques unless you pay for the program or materials. Very powerful though, simple and anyone can do it.

This is all such a blessing to anyone who is not aware of this. There are of course many other methods of health that do not require surgery, expensive treatments and dangerous painful/harmful treatments. I personally have experienced these as have hundreds of others. Its one thing to believe a book its another to believe a friend. Wellness is out there and its actually easy and natural. Wellness is abundant and ready to be at all times.

Sustainable Flow

The more In integrate sustainability into my life the more I realize it is a natural order.
It is so obvious in nature as the leaves fall from the trees in the winter to allow more sun through to heat around it, while providing nutrients for leaves to grow in the spring and protect from the heat of the summer sun.
It is quite clear the divine perfection of the universe when the rain that falls from the sky is naturally oxygenated water (which is exactly the kind of water life wants, not filtered striped treated dead water) and that this water is completely renewable without any devise or engineering feet.
It makes so much sense when I find out about technologies that run cars, generators and other powering devises with the power of water that is so obviously abundant. It makes sense that the most useful substances would be abundant.
It makes sense when I read about oxygen therapy and how it can cure "incurable" diseases such as cancer and aids. By simply feeding our bodies with living substances such as raw foods, living beverages and oxygenated waters.
All of these potent abundant methods are abundant and renewable. As I start using and utilizing all the substances around me for my benefit and using them in an efficient way I start to become extremely abundant in many things. I may invest money in some glass for passive solar or some solar cells for electricity but I know have energy that is from a clean and renewable source. I do not have to burn things up or dig huge holes in the ground to harness this power. When I build a home that is efficient all costs go down as it is built stronger, more usable and much more insulated. As I establish a composting system I start to get large amounts of super nutrient rich soil with very little effort. This soil is then used to add to my raised beds that are on an automatic drip system. The plants then produce food whether I am there or not as they have what they need and they do there thing. I establish some bee hives and not only do they help my garden but I get honey. I start worm farms and all I do is feed them some rotting materials and they produce the most potent soil ever. Life lives and all I have to do is provide opportunity for it to flourish and so it is.
As I focus on what I am inspired about and what I want to be focusing on I naturally bring forth stuff that is beneficial on many levels. I do not have to "make a living" I do not have to "make ends meet" I do not have to "deal with reality" I do not have to "be in control and know whats going to happen" I do not have to be or achieve anything I AM FREE and in that FREEDOM life force flows through me and all that is important IS.

Realities

Hardship, lack and difficulty are not so much truths as beliefs, perspectives and core frequencies established from being a part of this world.
It is as complex as changing everything that has to do with these experiences and all involved.
It is as simple as realizing abundance, flow, and divine synchronicity exist and allowing it to be new truth.
Blessings

Composting and worm farming session

I am doing a free composting and worm farming session. This Sunday 17th at 1pm. I am inviting anyone who is interested to join me for a fully functional efficient understanding of how composting works, benefits, uses, natural resources, recycling and much more beneficial aspects of the process. Composting is such an efficient way of recycling matter into a useful substance of matter that is otherwise under utilized.
I envision the day when large plots are used for compost and that compost heats all the house water, when that compost is then used to grow all the food and that food is then eaten. When instead of millions and millions of tons of recycalable compostable USABLE trash is turned into compost on a local comunial level.
Composting is so doable and so efficient on many levels. I am so happy to share this with anyone interested.
This will be a 4 + or - time hour long session. It can be done fun and dirty or nice and clean. This will be hands on experiential composting feeling and understanding the process for real integration and utilization!
We will go over the whole process from starting a completely new heap and all the different ingredients that can be used and different styles and approaches. We will then turn other piles that are further down in the process and see results of the evolution.
Then anyone is free to pick and choose among the techniques and approaches based on what ones preference is. Fast focused or slow relaxed. Many many piles or one little one. It is so beneficial and is really worth integrating on many levels.
We will also go over worm farming and there is some nice gardening going also.
Bring food, snacks if you want such, we have good water. Will do no matter the weather.

Abundant Health!

Being healthy is so important to me. Feeling good having energy mental focus and strength to do whats important is important! I like to feel good in my body and enjoy and love it.
I feel like respect and understanding are really important in health. I feel like everyone's body is different and what everyone wants out of there bodies is different. So there is most defiantly not a "way" to be healthy or a stat that defines healthy.
Its really important to remember that the body is naturally healthy. Aging is a disease. Our cells are constantly re generating. The problem is that they are regenerating in decline rather than in life. When one realizes the body's natural ability to live abundantly and one supports that process its quite easy.
Loving my body and listening to what my body wants is important. My body always knows whats best for it and its not a matter of my body working right but of my allowing my body to work right.
There are so many simple natural energies out there to help facilitate the process.
I am a huge fan of fasting. I feel that in fasting I am allowing my body to release and detox stuff that it doesn't want in there. I don't fast as much as I used to but I very rarely eat any more than 2 hours before bed and any sooner than 4 hours after I wake up. So with sleep I am getting a solid 14 hours give or take of semi fasting each day. Fasting is understood and always there when I feel it will benefit me. I also eat 1 meal a day with fruit/raw food in the earlier parts of the day.
Raw food. If its not raw and organic it doesn't have to much nutritional value. If one eats and wants to continue eating cooked food I defiantly recommend some good supplements. I have a couple good raw books listed at the bottom of the blog. Raw food is a way to get nutrients and life energy from food rather than require lots of energy to process like cooked food. It really just makes sense and shows it self in ones life style very quickly.
One of the biggest breakthroughs for me in health was when I realized how much I ate and how much of that eating was based on my stomach being "hungry". The stomach gets hungry when there is less than normal amounts of food in it. So being hungry does not mean that I need food but just that there is less than normal amounts of food in there. When I started to just allow my self to be hungry my stomach size decreased a lot and the amount of food I needed/was hungry for decreased.
Another factor is empty calories. There are lots of fun foods that are totally empty in nutrients and just supply calories. I am a fan of enjoying eating and am also a fan of eating whatever I want. For me its about moderation. I focus on the earlier parts of the day eating stuff that is highly nutritious and little empty calories. So raw foods and super foods and no breads, pastas, dairy's,corn, and other empty/cooked foods. Then if I really want to at night I will eat something like popcorn/pizza/pasta/ice cream or other fun enjoyable nutrient void foods! =D>
A good friend of mine makes it quite simple when giving eating advise. He says "when you are about to eat, you say to your self. I can eat this, or I can eat this" I quite like that because it keeps it simple and a great point. I find its quite helpful to always have food with me when I go places. That way when I get hungry I don't have to rely on the situation of empty foods to crave hunger. I can grab something that I have with me. Then I just choose to only buy certain foods. There are soooooo many tasty tasty foods out there that area also very supportive of an energized healthy body!
Stretching is so important to me. Not only does it give me space to be connected with my body, feeling and loving it but it allows me to be aware of the state it is in. I can tell when I start stretching how stressed, tired, or over worked I am. It also allows me to release clogged energy, and loosen muscles. This is an every day multiple time a day thing! It doesn't have to be a yoga class it doesn't have to be an hour long session but before bed always and some other time of day is good too. Keeping the connection with the body is really really important.
I fully believe that one can be sick free, disease free, energized, and abundant without any supplements or medicines. I also understand everyone is in a different place in the process. I have a list of recommended substances for various applications and situations. Just remember that not only is it possible to be healthy abundant and energized but that it is a natural state. By nurturing and supporting it it is sure to be! There are so many answers/solutions/remedies out there! Don't settle for something that doesn't work really really well! I have a list of many powerful possibilities. There is no one or right answer only what works for each one. Explore and try something until you find what really nurtures that healthy abundance. First step is believing and wanting abundant health!
Here is a cool book on Aloe recipes that can take the place of medicines, prescriptions, and other processed forms of treatment! Aloe can be grown indoors in almost every house and out doors in many places. I have 10 pots of it that I use very often! Allow Power!

If you take vitamins or other such supplements or if you eat mostly cooked food. I recommend Qivana's core system. Synthetic vitamins (lots of them are) are treated as poison by the body and just put lots of stress on the liver and such. Vitamins that are cheap or that are sold at places like GNC are mostly of low quality. If its not a full spectrum vitamin then often times its quite useless as it requires the body to use different reserves to complete the vitamins lacks. I could put a lot of words in here on this but I will stick to the points.
The Qivana core system only costs $65 per month per person for two different supplements that provide all the vitamin needs and more. One product is a pro biotic, which is highly beneficial as it balances and strengthens the natural bacteria in the system. This is really important as it is the bacteria good and bad that is responsible for many sickness as it is key in the immune system functionality. While also very important in the digestive process and much more. The bacteria in the intestines regulates a lot of nutrient absorption as well. Without a good balance of bacteria lots of nutrient food may not be utilized any way. It is a great supplement for people that eat cooked foods too as it highly helps the digestive system like a pre meal pill and such. The 2nd product is a holy trinity of herbs. These 3 herbs work together and allow each other to work better creating optimized utilization. It really helps the inflamitory system so anyone with arthritis or other such ailments will greatly benefit. It helps with metabolism and good blood flow while also providing lots of energy and focus. Then after 3 months of taking the product they send a free detox system to really get deep in the system. This detox removes heavy metals, radioactive substances and other toxis without depleting the body's minerals. All of these supplements have a unique beneficial 3 stage release system. The pill breaks down in 3 different stages of the digestion process so that it is more efficiently utilized by the body. First in the esophagus, 2nd and 3rd in the large and small intestines. Really cool stuff at work in this system check out more info at www.myqivana.com/quinne and email me with any questions.

If you wear vision enhancing devises for vision impaired eyes I highly recommend healing the eye rather than continuing to impair it. It is quite possible and this book describes how and it has a money back guarantee! So if you just aren't ready or the book is bogus you just return it after a couple months and get full refund! its worth a try! See without aid! Focus NOW

Garden!

AHHHHHHHHHHH
I now have over 30 varieties of food growing in my garden! Figs, Blackberries, Blueberries, Tomatoes, 5 kinds of peppers, 4 kinds of carrots, 6 kinds of squash, 3 kinds of pumpkins, 7 kinds of melons, kale, chard, beets, peas, beans, oregano, rosemary, parsley, cilantro and whatever I am not remembering!
I am so thrilled with the fact I have done it all with all free recycled and re used substances. All compost material is collected from various resources around the area all bins made from scrap all raised beds from harvested materials. Just had to pay for seeds and its like $2 for a pack of seeds! Good investment ;-). This was all done in a year on a plot of land that had not been used for growing before. I find its really helpful to have a vision and idea of what is to be done. To get the steps organized and understood. Then to find an efficient way of going about it. I read books and that's just about all the resources I needed. Its much easier to understand the process and have an idea before going about it. One can even grow hydroponic gardens indoors haha!
I find it very fulfilling and quite worth the effort when done right. I am going to be having gardening parties here on weekends coming up so that we can see feel and touch the process. I'm thinking from noon to 5 or so on Saturday or Sunday. We can play and talk gardening and share in the process. I will post when decided and email me if your interested in it.
I recommend getting some books at the library or trying some of these e books I will list. E books are cool cause no paper is involved and they are cheaper to buy because there is much less cost involved. If you like one of these e books that I list buy it through the link I provide cause I will get a commission for the recommendation =D> I'm working on a book of my own on easy, efficient, recycled, organic gardening! Not ready yet though and info is important now so here are some others.
This e book is pretty cheap and has a money back guarantee. That way if its not helpful its OK to refund. I feel really good about that kind of deal.

Sustainability

OMG!
I have amazing insights into sustainability. Ideas that could render my life and others free energy for all of life.
I am so angry because I have been trying to share these ideas with people and all they can do is come up with reasons why it wont work.
Yes this makes me more determined.....Maybe that is the divine beauty of it all. Yet I am still angry because people are not supportive and active in this process.
If my ideas become a success then yes I will be a genius and yes fuck them for being brainwashed drones.
If my ideas fail then fuck for me and everyone. For I believe that energy can be free and sustainable.....If I truly believe then there must be a way and all these non believers are only a test of my faith.....Actually I know there is a way the real question is, am I ready for it or not.
I say, yes I am!!!!......Is that just my justification or is that the conscious truth. I do not actually know. for again I say "Yes I am!!!" though experience will only tell.
One thing I know is this is a defining moment in my life. Whatever it is it will effect me in very influential ways.
For the sake of us all may I be on the path of sustainability.

Composting

Hey Everyone!
I'm super into composting atm. We as Americans have millions of tons of trash going into the landfill every year. Not only is it going into a landfill where it wont decompose because it is covered from the elements which facilitate composting but the amount of fuel and pollution created by the process is staggering. SOOO much of this trash can easily be composted. All leaves and yard scraps, all paper, cloth, food and so much more.
There are many levels one can take it to but any amount is an upgrade!
I have 12 compost bins going. All the bins I make out of old pallets that I collect for free or out of these huge sheets of super tough cardboard that I get for free from various companies. I just make 3 sided bins tied together with old wire, fabric ripped into strips, rope or numerous other spare free materials.
I then collect leaves, wood chips, grass clippings, manure and all of my food scraps and combine them in the bins. Then life starts to grow and the material gets decomposed and within 2 months I have super nutritional perfect dirt!
This is awesome for anyone who grows anything and for anyone who wants to do something with there compost able materials besides throw them away.
The most important factors are moisture and air. Without moisture and air there will be virtually no decomposition. So ideally the compost gets turned every 3-7 days. When it gets turned you add water and more nitrogen sources. Coffee grounds from coffee shops is a wonderful source, manure is a really abundant free source, grass clippings are a really accessible free optimal source, and food scraps.
So for the ideal set up you would be turning it every week to introduce air, water and new nitrogen. With this set up one could have a pile of leaves turn into perfect dirt in 2 months. One only needs to add about 1 part nitrogen to 30 part carbon (anything dead). Really though if the compost pile is hot (ideally 120-170f) it is doing its job and nothing needs to be done. This wont last long though without turning, wetting, and adding nitrogen.
As for food scraps one wants to be careful with meat, dairy, or any protein based product. As certain bacteria is produced and certain heat levels are required to break it down. Also it may attack certain rodents. However it is not dangerous if you are just to do it out in the back somewhere and not use it for a long period of time. Its only if you are wanting to use it within a couple months that you may want to choose not to introduce them to the pile.
One can also achieve nice dirt in a longer period of time without turning if one were to build a more aerated system. Say a 3 sided pallet structure with a pallet on the bottom or a tube with holes running through the center out into the air. Then one could just keep the pile moist with watering once a week and covering with plastic. This would keep it warmer, keep the moisture from evaporating to quickly and also allow plenty of air. This is a great system for anyone who doesn't really need the dirt but wants to compost instead of land fill.
I am doing lots of compost and am happy to facilitate the integration of it into our lives. Contact me for any info any time.
